The history of paper began nearly five thousand years ago in Ancient Egypt, where papyrus was used to write on. Firstly, the Sumerians had used clay tablets, which were not light and solid. T'sai Lun is credited with creating the first sheet of paper by mixing plant fibres with old rags and leaving the mixture to dry. Before the invention of paper, documents in China had been written on bone tablets or bamboo scrolls. Silk was used too, yet this was expensive. Paper spread slowly out of China to the Middle East; however, it didn't reach Europe until a thousand years later. People were still using animal skins to make a thin material called parchment. Wood replaced plant fibres in papermaking to make the process cheaper.
